Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated:

We know that traveling to Ireland is a big commitment and might feel a little daunting if it’s your first time heading overseas. Here are the answers to the questions we’re hearing most.

🧳 What should I pack? (The “Dublin Essentials” List)

October in Ireland is the season of “four seasons in one day.” You might start the morning with bright sun, have a 10-minute rain shower at noon, and a chilly breeze by 4:00 PM.

The Essentials:

  • A Solid Rain Jacket: Not a heavy winter parka, but something waterproof with a hood. Umbrellas are often useless against the Dublin wind!
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: You will walk more than you think. Dublin is a “flat” city, but the cobblestones in Temple Bar are unforgiving.
  • The “Post-Reception” Shoes: Ladies, as mentioned in the itinerary, bring a pair of flats or block heels for the pub crawl.
  • Plug Adapters: You need the Type G (three-prong) adapter.
  • A Portable Power Bank: Between taking photos and using Google Maps to find the next pub, your phone battery will drain fast.

The “Do Not Pack” List:

  • Hair Dryers/Straighteners: As mentioned in our Phones & Power guide, these are high-risk for frying. Use the hotel’s dryer!
  • Heavy Winter Coats: Unless you are very sensitive to cold, a medium-weight jacket with a sweater underneath is usually plenty for October.
  • Too Many Formal Clothes: Outside of the wedding day, Dublin is very casual. Jeans and a nice sweater or “smart-casual” top will get you in anywhere.

🛂 Do I really need a passport?

Yes. Every guest, including children, must have a valid passport. Most importantly, it must be valid for at least six months past our wedding date. Check out Entry Requirements page for more on the “Six Month Rule.”

🛂 Do I need a visa or any other paperwork?

US Citizens do not need a visa for Ireland, but you will need a UK ETA if you plan on visiting Belfast or London. Check out Entry Requirements for the full breakdown.

💰 What currency is used in Dublin?

The Republic of Ireland uses the Euro (€). Northern Ireland uses the British Pound (£). Most places in Dublin are tap-to-pay friendly! See Money & Currency for tips on avoiding fees.

🔌 Will my phone and hair dryer work?

Your phone will work (with an eSIM), but your hair dryer likely won’t without a voltage converter (and even then, it’s risky!). Read more about Phones & Power to avoid a “fried” situation.

☘️ What will the weather be like?

October in Dublin is “changeable.” Expect temperatures in the 50s°F (10-15°C) and occasional light rain. We recommend layers! Check our Climate & Packing guide.

🚗 Should I rent a car?

We highly recommend not renting a car if you are staying in Dublin. They drive on the left, the streets are narrow, and parking is expensive. See Getting Around for better ways to travel.

🇮🇪 Is the wedding in the UK?

Nope! Dublin is in the Republic of Ireland, an independent country. We’ve put together a quick Civics Lesson so you can sound like a local when you arrive.

🍺 What is the etiquette for tipping and drinking?

Tipping is much more relaxed than in the US, but “The Rule of Rounds” at the pub is sacred. Check out our Pub Etiquette guide.

📅 When should I arrive in Ireland?

We recommend landing by Friday, October 9th at the latest to shake off the jet lag before the ceremony. View the full Timeline.

🎁 Where are you registered?

Your presence is the gift! Truly, we mean it. Traveling all the way to Ireland to celebrate with us is more than we could ever have asked for. If you feel inclined, we have a Honeymoon Fund set up, but please know it’s completely optional.
