Whether you are a seasoned traveler or a first-timer, there are a few non-negotiable rules for entering Ireland and its neighbors.
The Passport Rule
All travelers—including infants—must have a valid passport. There are no exceptions for international travel.
The “Six Month” Rule
Even if your passport hasn’t expired yet, most airlines and immigration officers require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of return.
- The Math: If your passport expires before April 2027, you should renew it now to avoid being denied boarding at the airport.
Going to the UK? (England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland)
If you plan on taking a side trip to London or even driving two hours north to Belfast, you must deal with the UK’s new digital border system.
The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation)
As of February 2026, all US citizens must have a valid ETA to enter any part of the United Kingdom.
- Cost: £16 (approx. $20).
- How to get it: Download the UK ETA app or apply on GOV.UK.
- Timing: Most are approved in minutes, but you should apply at least 3 days before you plan to cross into the UK.
- Note: You need this even for a day trip to Northern Ireland (where Belfast is)!
Going to Mainland Europe? (France, Italy, Spain, etc.)
If you are visiting other European countries before or after Ireland, you will encounter the ETIAS system.
- Note: Ireland is not part of this specific system, so you don’t need it if you are only staying in the Republic of Ireland.
- Requirement: If you hop over to the mainland, you’ll need to apply for this digital authorization online (approx. €7) before leaving the US.
First-Time Passports & Renewals
If you don’t have a passport, or yours is expiring soon, start the process as soon as possible.
- Timeline: Standard processing can take 8–12 weeks. Don’t wait until the summer of 2026!
- Where to start: Visit travel.state.gov to find your nearest acceptance facility (usually a local post office).
Pro-Tip: The Digital Backup
Take a clear photo of your passport’s photo page and keep it in your phone’s “Favorites.” Having a digital copy makes life much easier if you ever happen to misplace the physical book while traveling.
